The frost-blackening and putting to bed of our dahlias always marks our transition from autumn into winter at Organic Blooms.
This annual turning of the year ritual is almost complete, with our Natureworks trainees cutting them back and carefully applying a ‘dahlia duvet’ of green waste compost to each of our 17 dahlia beds to help protect the tubers from the ravages of winter. It came over a fortnight later than usual this year. One day our field remained ablaze with blooms lingering in the unseasonal warmth of late autumn sunshine; the next morning the ground was frozen and they were gone. We found this overlap of seasons slightly discombobulating; we had already harvested our willow several weeks before and were well into weaving wreath bases by the time the first hard frost arrived.
Nevertheless, it signalled a shift in focus from flowers to festive preparations as we enter the final chapter of the year. Our wood burners are alight, our lunchtime soup kettle is simmering and as the welcome stillness of winter gradually descends on our fields we’re looking forward to the warmth and light of the festivities that punctuate the quietness of the darker months.
The turning of the year from late autumn into early winter also marks the opening of our festive shop. Visit our online shop to order beautiful wreaths, swags and kits hand crafted by our team from willow, foliage, dried flowers and seed heads grown in our fields, or pop in to our pop up festive shop here at Organic Blooms for more planters, gifts and decorations – we’re open 8.30am – 3.30pm Monday to Thursday from Monday 1st December to Thursday 18th December 2025.
